Before you train, you should consult your physician to make sure you are fit for Martial Arts practice. If you do become injured during your training, you should immediately consult your physician.

What does Jiu-Jitsu mean?

Jiu-Jitsu translates to "the gentle art," it is referred to as such because the art utilizes leverage and balance rather than force and strength. Also, the finishing submissions are viewed as a more humane alternative to striking.

What is the difference between Classical, Japanese, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

There are numerous differences, the main one being that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) focuses more on ground grappling while Classical Jiu-Jitsu places a greater emphasis on standing grappling and striking.

What are the different forms of Jiu-Jitsu?

There is sport, self defense, and vale tudo.

Uniforms

The official uniform of Jiu-jitsu in which you will be training is called a "Kimono" or "Gi". This uniform consists or 3 pieces: a jacket or top, a pair of drawstring pants (usually padded at the knees) and a belt. The uniform is made out a specially weaved cotton material that will be able to withstand the rigorous practice of Jiu-jitsu without immediately tearing. Your Kimono should be kept as clean as possible and treated as your armor.

Why do Jiu-Jitsu practitioners wear the Gi?

The Gi serves as a teaching tool for developing a strong grip, balance, and control. Fighting with the Gi requires a high level of precision and attention to detail; two tools essential for good Jiu-Jitsu.

Do Injuries happen in Jiu-jitsu? Yes.

Like any physical activity, injuries do happen. The best way to prevent them is by training under the supervision of a professional and accredited instructor. During your practice, avoid people with large egos and get rid of your own. If you feel uncomfortable working with someone, it is ok to say no. Remember that at each school, people are practicing at different paces and for different reasons, so it is important to work with people that have similar motives for training.

How long does it take to obtain a black belt?

This varies for each individual, however it is usually between 8 to 15 years.

Why does Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focus on ground fighting?

It is a fact that nearly all real fights will end up on the ground eventually. Also, BJJ always prepares its fighters for a physically superior opponent, someone much bigger and stronger. Striking with a larger opponent is very dangerous, when on the feet they utilize leverage to their advantage and instead must try to match his strength. On the ground, leverage can be used to control and submit even the largest of opponents. It has been proven time and time again that if you can't fight on the ground - then you can't fight.

Is Jiu-Jitsu effective against other styles of Martial Arts?

In MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) matches and no rules challenges matches Jiu-Jitsu has consistently proved its supremacy. Evidence of this can be found in the videos "Gracies in Action I and II," a documentary in which the finest Jiu-Jitsu fighters took on and defeated all opponents.

Is Jiu-Jitsu beneficial to women?

Yes. Jiu-Jitsu is excellent for rape prevention and other forms of self defense necessary for women. Also, since Jiu-Jitsu was designed for smaller people women will not find their lack of size a hinderance.

How are classes structured?

We begin with a warm up of stretching and calisthenics, then a series of grappling related drills followed by technique instruction and finally a long period of sparring (also known as rolling).
